Werewolves Anonymous

Parenthood has invited the most refreshing take on the holiday season, and the idea of one of my oldest friends, Santa.

Combat Sorties from OEF

Seven years ago, I spent December 27, 2013 in a Huey with my dear friend and mentor, Zach.

We were working the Helmand Province along with the rest of the “World Famous Gunfighters” of HMLA-369. Each year that passes brings a little bit more confusion about how to interpret this anniversary, but what remains crystal clear is an overwhelming appreciation for my loved ones, both immediate and distant.

Last year, Santa brought me Philosophy, Psychology, and Sociology books. (He must have heard I didn’t know what I want to be when I grow up…) This year I was gifted books on Currency, Economics, and Entrepreneurship. It seems I’m closing in on a vocation, and application for my new title: “Emerging Behavioral Science Expert”. I have always put defensive air quotes over new roles I didn’t feel qualified for, to joke away some of the fear.

The truth is, you don’t need them. A little confidence can go a long way. If Santa can be real, so can the potential to bring change — even if it’s scary.

It doesn’t seem that I can control whether or not today will turn me into a werewolf, but I do have the power to share that it’s something I deal with. So, if you see me in cut-off jorts running through the woods tonight — just know it’s a full moon for me, and I’ll be back tomorrow. Also, if you’re dealing with something you’re confused about—you’re more than welcome to rip your shirt off and join, but just for the night. We’ve got important work to do tomorrow.

Goodbye (riddance), 2020. Thanks for the hindsight.

Happy New Year Everyone!
